Long-term Aspect of Treatment with Metronidazole (flagyl) in Trichomonal Vaginitis.

چکیده
The patients were seen at the V.D. Clinic of the Central Middlesex Hospital. Prostitutes and women known to be very promiscuous were excluded from the trial as it was thought that the re-infection rate might make the interpretation of results difficult. Flagyl (200 mg. three times daily for 10 days) and dummy tablets were dispensed in identical packets which were randomized and numbered. The key to the numbers was kept by the hospital pharmacist until the end of the trial 3 months later. In cases of treatment failure, the patient was given a 10-day course of Flagyl; this ensured that all who failed to respond had at least one course of the drug. In this controlled part of the trial, there were 67 women, 10 of whom defaulted after their first attendance; of the remaining 57 patients, 28 had received Flagyl and 29 a course of dummy tablets. It was of interest to find that of the ten early defaulters, seven had received dummy tablets, which suggests in the light of the trial results that early defaulting does not necessarily indicate successful treatment. Table I gives the results of the controlled trial; there were three (10 * 3 per cent.) failures after Flagyl against 27 (93-1 per cent.) failures in the controls. The results of re-treating the failures are shown in TABLE I

Trichomonal vaginitis treated with one dose of metronidazole.
Since its introduction in France, metronidazole (Flagyl) has become the standard treatment for trichomonal vaginitis (Durel, Roiron, Siboulet, and Borel, 1959). The course recommended at that time and continued ever since was 200 mg. three times daily for 7 days, giving a cure rate of 85 to 98 per cent. (Csonka, 1963; Evans and Catterall, 1970; Keighley, 1971). We have investigated the possibil...
متن کاملVaginal moniliasis after treatment of trichomonal infection with "Flagyl".
There is some difference of opinion regarding the incidence of vaginal thrush following the treatment of trichomonal vaginitis with the new oral trichomonicide, metronidazole ("Flagyl"). Rees (1960) and Rodin, King, Nicol, and Barrow (1960) concluded that metronidazole neither encouraged nor inhibited the growth of the fungus concerned. Watt and Jennison (1960) found coincident monilial infecti...
متن کاملNifuratel compared with metronidazole in the treatment of trichomonal vaginitis.
Nifuratel (Magmilor) was compared with metronidazole (Flagyl) in the treatment of trichomonal vaginitis by a randomized double-blind trial. Only 18 out of 47 patients (38%) treated with nifuratel were found to be cured, whereas 42 out of 49 patients (85%) treated with metronidazole were cured. Severe reactions, necessitating withdrawal of treatment, occurred in three patients treated with nifur...
متن کاملNifuratel (Magmilor) in trichomonal vaginitis.
Introduced almost a decade ago, Flagyl (Metronidazole) is still the only acceptable systemic therapy available for trichomoniasis. Fortunately, the efficacy of Flagyl has remained at a very high level and there is no evidence that Trichomonas vaginalis has developed, or is developing, any resistance to it. However, there has always been the occasional case in which even very large doses of Flag...
متن کاملFlagyl in the Oral Treatment of Trichomonal
Several reports may be found in the literature on the trichomonicidal properties of derivatives of Azomycin (Nakamura, 1955; Horie, 1956; Cosar and Julou, 1959). Among this group, 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole (Flagyl) was found to possess a high activity and a very low toxicity in experimentally-infected mice (Cosar and Julou, 1959). These results were confirmed by Durel, Roiron...
